Surf and Undertow is a six painting, 25ft movement about my memory of the ocean.
This installation is especially important to me because I am hoping to provide a pause in the viewers day where they can connect back to their memory of the ocean.
Personally I love visiting the ocean. We didn’t have the means to visit it growing up and still it’s special when we do.
As an artist painting the oceans is a powerful and sublime experience. The waves are constant and determined. When I look at the waves coming in and the surf I think about relentless force, repetition in terms of time, losing of time, and a rhythm that is like a heartbeat. So consistent and important and something we feel is predictable and forget about.
As an artist leaving the ocean after painting it is very emotional. I feel like I am not sure if I will experience it again. And even if I could go all the time I wouldn’t want to. To have a place that is so special I wouldn’t want to know its mysteries all at once.
I hope the installation will connect people to a memory of the ocean to relive a piece of their experience of it.
